Attic Radiant Barrier and Passive Ventilation

image

In order to increase headroom the barrier was installed with a 1 inch air space. R-3 insulation is installed as a backing.

Second layer of R-3 insulation board creates a second  1 inch air space. Beyond the foil to floor is a  vented 3 foot roof overhang. So air will flow from there up to the ridge vent.

The original ridge board was missing.  The roof was being supported by posts sitting on the ceiling joists. So the rafters at this point where not adequately supported or connected to the wall. The roof flashing was removed and the roof cut back so that a new  full length ridge board could be installed.

Ridge board high spot is at the rafter. The low space is the vent cutout.

Final installation is a 2×10 cut out to accept the rafter and a second 2×10 back.

Rafters inset into the ridge board for complete support and solid connecting point. Mortar has been poured behind the ridge board to fill in any space between it and the wall.
